Surbiton Hospital (1936 - 2011) to become Surbiton Health Centre ...
The Hill Manor estate on the Ewell road was purchased as the site of the new hospital, built to serve as a War Memorial to the local servicemen who had died in World War I.
1934
07 October |
Lord Ashcombe - the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, laid the foundation stone for the new Hospital, built in the grounds of the Manor. The estimated cost = £38,812.
|
1936 - 28 July |
The Duchess of Gloucester (1901 - 2004) officially opened The Surbiton Voluntary Hospital. The cost to build and equip the Hospital = £54,000. The Hospital had an Operating Theatre, Out-Patients, X-Ray Department and Administrative Offices. There was also an 11-bed Maternity Block adjacent to the main building. |
World War II |
The Hospital joined the Emergency Medical Service under the control of St. Thomas' Hospital. |
1946 |
A Physiotherapy Department was opened. |
1947 |
A Nurses' Home was built. |
1948 |
|
1954 |
The Maternity Ward closed and converted into a Children's Ward. Maternity patients were referred to Kingston Hospital. |
1974 |
The Hospital came under control of the Kingston and Richmond Area Health Authority, following a major re-organisation of the NHS. |
1982 |
The Hospital came under the control of the Kingston and Esher District Health Authority, following a further re-organisation of the NHS. |
1994 |
The Hospital came under the administration of the Kingston and District Community NHS Trust. |
2004 |
The Hospital came under the control of the Kingston Primary Care Trust whilst facing closure. |
The buildings had become run-down, and the back-up generator needed replacing. Water was leaking through the roof and under the floorboards. A 7,000 strong Petition, to keep the Hospital open, failed. The Trust then decided to the close the Hospital rather than spend an estimated £300,000 on repairing the roof.
2005 |
In-patients needing intermediate care, were transferred to Tolworth Hospital, and those requiring continuing care were sent to a local nursing home. Some healthcare-related facilities for out-patients remained on the site.

"I was delighted to be able to visit the new Surbiton Health Centre on 27th February, ahead of GP practices moving in on Monday 4th March. Surbiton's new Health Centre is something I have campaigned on for over a decade. I was proud to support this project from its inception, as I believe it will provide an excellent and necessary service to local residents."
David Smith, Chief Officer for Kingston Clinical Commissioning Group and Director of Health and Adult Services for Kingston Council
